“You have to take your chances when you get them, otherwise you leave the game for the taking. But right now, I feel nothing but pride in the way we played and the character we showed.”

With some changes already confirmed and others expected to follow, Portugal are now trying to look to the future, especially as they will be one of the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2030.

Many of the Portuguese squad should still be around in four years’ time, and more talent is on the way, with Portugal being crowned U-17 world champions in 2025. Once again, expectations will be sky-high.

“We have to look to the future differently now,” stressed Fernandes. “We have to be truer to ourselves and make the most of what we already have within this group. We have to try to play more our way, in our own style, and find ways to make teams respect us more.” (FIFA)

Waltham, United States: Kylian Mbappe on Monday labelled a Paraguayan senator "despicable" and "not worthy of her position" after she racially abused the France captain on social media after the World Cup last-16 clash between the countries at the weekend.

Mbappe's reaction came after Celeste Amarilla attacked the Real Madrid superstar in the wake of Saturday's game in Philadelphia, a bad-tempered affair which France won 1-0.

"Mrs Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and not worthy of your position," Mbappe wrote on X.

"You do not represent Paraguay, the country that has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition.

"Through your lack of awareness and your uninhibited racism, the entire world has already forgotten your team's run and historic effort at this World Cup," he added.

Amarilla racially abused Mbappe and in another post called him a "colonised Cameroonian who has really pretended to be French, embittered, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly", and accused him of being "scared to death" during the game.

The comments have provoked an angry reaction in France, with the country's sports minister, Marina Ferrari, describing them as "abject, disgraceful and all the more unacceptable coming from a politician".

Mbappe, who father was originally from Cameroon before settling in France, scored the only goal of the game from a penalty in the second half, taking Les Bleus through to a quarter-final this Thursday against Morocco.

وأضاف مهاجم ريال مدريد الإسباني: «أنتِ لا تمثلين الباراغواي، البلد الذي أظهر شغفا وشرفا طوال البطولة. بسبب تهورك وعنصريتك الصريحة، نسي العالم بأسره المسيرة والجهود التاريخية التي قدمها لاعبوكم خلال هذه النسخة من كأس العالم، زلم يتبقَّ منها سوى امرأة غير كفؤة تسيء إلى سمعة بلدها».
وتابع «لن أسمح أبدا لأمثالك بنشر كراهيتهم وعنصريتهم في جميع أنحاء العالم».

بشعة وغير مقبولة
كما سارعت أعلى السلطات في البلدين إلى التفاعل، فقدّم ماكرون دعمه لهداف المنتخب الفرنسي التاريخي (63 هدفا في 103 مباريات دولية) منددا بـ»هجمات عنصرية».
وأفاد قصر الإليزيه أن «الرئيس الباراغواياني كتب إلى الرئيس الفرنسي في هذا الصدد، مدينا التصريحات التي تم الإدلاء بها، كما فعلت وزارة الخارجية الباراغوايانية». وسارعت حكومة الباراغواي بدورها إلى التنصل من تصريحات سيليست أماريا، معتبرة أنها «منافية للقيم والمبادئ التي تقوم عليها التعايش السلمي واحترام كرامة الإنسان».وأضافت أن هذه التصريحات «تندرج حصرا ضمن مسؤوليتها الفردية ولا تمثل بأي حال من الأحوال موقف حكومة جمهورية الباراغواي ولا الشعب الباراغواياني».وانضم رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم جاني إنفانتينو أيضا إلى موجة الاستنكار.كتب على إنستغرام «أدين بشكل قاطع التصريحات العنصرية التي وُجهت إلى كيليان مبابي من قبل السناتورة الباراغوايانية سيليست أماريا. إن عالم كرة القدم والمجتمع بأسره يقفان متضامنين مع قائد المنتخب الفرنسي: يتعين علينا مكافحة العنصرية والقضاء عليها معا»، هذا ما كتبه المسؤول الإيطالي-السويسري في رسالة نشرها على حسابه في إنستغرام.
