Wisconsin-born Esmir Bajraktarević scored the decisive penalty in a shootout victory that secured Bosnia and Herzegovina's place in the 2026 World Cup.

The 21-year-old American-born forward, born in Appleton, Wisconsin to Bosnian parents, successfully converted his penalty against Italy after the teams drew 1-1 in regulation. After scoring, Bajraktarević tore off his jersey and was mobbed by teammates as Bosnia secured its second World Cup appearance, following its debut in 2014.
