Jets reportedly place franchise tag on RB Breece Hall as two sides continue to negotiate long-term deal

The New York Jets will reportedly place the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall ahead of Tuesday's deadline, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

The two sides will continue to negotiate a "lucrative long-term deal," ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The franchise tag is a one-year, guaranteed tender that prevents players from hitting free agency and is usually used when the team and player are far apart in negotiations. The franchise tag does not prevent a player from signing a long-term extension with the club, but the deadline to do so is July 15.

The franchise tag for running backs ranks last among offensive positions at a reported $14.293 million salary for the 2026 season.

Hall has spent his first four seasons with the Jets since being drafted in the second round in 2022. A promising rookie campaign in which Hall averaged 5.8 yards per carry and a career-best 6.9 yards per touch came to a premature end, however, after suffering a torn ACL in his second career start. He had gained 72 yards on four rush attempts that game prior to the injury.

The 24-year-old running back is coming off a career season in which he rushed for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 350 receiving yards and a touchdown in the passing game. Hall's role increased after his teammate, 2024 fourth-round running back Braelon Allen, went down in Week 4 with a season-ending knee injury.

He closed out his season with 129 scrimmage yards and a score against the Patriots — one of just three running backs to have 100-plus rushing yards and a touchdown against the Super Bowl competitors in the 2025 season.

Hall has been a centerpiece on a Jets team that has made multiple trades recently and has had constant changes at the head coaching and quarterback positions. While the franchise tag does not guarantee Hall will not be moved, it does allow the Jets to receive compensation if they trade him under the tag.

Hall is now the third player to receive the franchise tag this season, joining Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens.
