According to NFL on CBS’s lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, the Denver Broncos are eyeing a running back splash in free agency, and they could be the place where running back Kenneth Walker lands.

First, Jones notes the Broncos’ interest in Jets running back Breece Hall is why the team opted to place the franchise tag on him instead of using the transition tag. They feared the Broncos would offer Hall a deal they could not match, and instead of risking losing Hall, they placed the Franchise tag on him, guaranteeing that he will remain with them for at least one more season.

With Hall likely off the table, they now turn their eyes towards reigning Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker. He is expected to hit free agency and get anywhere between $12 to $16 million dollars per year, with teams like the Chiefs, Jaguars, Giants, and the Broncos likely to be interested. Jones notes that the Broncos are an “obvious landing spot” for Walker and later adds that “Denver could be the place for him”.

Over the past 24 to 48 hours, the talk surrounding the Broncos has been their aggressive pursuit of a running back. There have now multiple reports about their interest in Breece Hall; they reportedly made a last-minute offer for veteran running back David Montgomery, and now, they seem like major players for Kenneth Walker. He is the top free agent running back available and would be an ideal running mate for second-year running back RJ Harvey.

They have also been linked to Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. and veteran JK Dobbins, who spent last season with the Broncos. Both would cost a bit less than Walker and could be options if Walker’s price tag reaches a point they are not willing to go. I also wouldn’t rule out them calling around to see who could be available via trade. There has been a lot of turnover in coaching this offseason, which could make some backs available for the right price. That is just speculation on my part, but with them seemingly being aggressive in the running back market, it would make sense for them to be making some calls.

Legal tampering starts on Monday, so we’ll continue to get news and rumors over the next few days. Either way, the Broncos seem poised to make a splash signing/trade at the running back position this offseason.
